SUBSURFACE MINE RECLAMATION FOR URBAN CONSTRUCTION

Urban encroachment on historic metalliferous mineral claims has resulted in the need for a coordinated approach towards mine reclamation that involves numerous areas of expertise including the geologic, engineering, biological and environmental sciences. With the continued growth of urban communities, reclamation activities are anticipated to increase in sophistication and multidisciplinary needs, complicating efforts to reduce safety concerns and provide structural stability for residential, commercial and industrial sites. A model developed for exploration and reclamation of mining sites provides an understanding of mine reclamation activities that coordinates multiple scientific disciplines to successfully identify, explore and reclaim abandoned mining sites.
