ADVANCED URBAN TRANSPORT SYSTEMS ALONG THE HIGHWAY NETWORK

The author discusses the need for attractive, modern forms of public transport in urban areas and considers various options in more detail. These include a) automated guideway transit (AGT) systems including Shuttle-Loop Transit, Group Rapid Transit and Personal Rapid Transit, b) linear motor cars, c) rent-by-the-trip public automobile service, d) dual controlled AGT, e) automated mixed-traffic vehicles, f) accelerating moving ways and g) fast transit links. The author suggests that progress in this field has been too slow and that more competent and innovative planning is needed at regional and local levels among the organisations involved.
