CONCEPTS FOR IN-CAR NAVIGATION SYSTEMS WITH TWO-WAY COMMUNICATIONS

In considering the development of autonomous vehicle navigation systems a need for packet-oriented, two-way communication has been identified. This paper discusses three different concepts which could be used based on a) standardised GSM data service, b) future GSM packet-oriented data service and c) Mobitex. Each system is described and comparisons made of their properties including a) data rate, b) mode, c) addressable area, d) equipment, e) costs, f) availability and g) additional equipment besides GSM telephone. An assessment is made of the system most likely to be used. For the covering abstract see IRRD 882109.
