This paper discusses the RUF system which comprises small electric vehicles riding on a triangular monorail, typically 4m above existing traffic corridors. The system is considered to be the solution to congestion and pollution whilst maintaining mobility. The advantages of the system are described. RUFs are rented or privately owned and operated by smart card. They can drive either on the road or transfer to the rail where they link up to form trains and switch to the control system. A larger version, the MAXI-RUF, takes 10 passengers and moves between stations. Details are given of the operation of the system. For the covering abstract see IRRD 882109.
