MEASURING CAPACITY UTILIZATION IN THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY

Capacity and utilization measures are produced for a variety of goods producing industries, however very little work has been done to develop measures for service industries such as truck transport. In this paper, four capacity utilization models with associated data sets, adjusted to conform to theoretical considerations, are presented for the For-Hire Trucking industry over an eighteen year period from 1975 to 1992. Preference for one model and data set over another is determined by how well thier resulting utilization rates agree with predicted levels of economic indicators such as prices, investment, outputs, and profits.
