LIQUEFACTION BEHAVIOR OF SAND-GRAVEL COMPOSITES. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE

Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by Evans and Zhou, published in this journal (Volume 121, Number 3, March 1995), are presented. In the first discussion, Bolognesi acknowledges and supports the authors' findings. Bolognesi suggests highlighting the evidence from undrained cyclic triaxial tests regarding the effect of the gravel content on liquefaction resistance of sand-gravel composites, and using this information to move closer to a methodology for estimating the cyclic strength of the composite from tests performed in the finer fraction. Discusser Day, in the second discussion, describes a complex transition zone of liquefaction resistance between low and high gravel content states. Discussions are followed by closure from author Mark D. Evans.
