THIRD FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME

The activities of the European Commission Transport Telematics Program on Driver Assistance and Cooperative Driving are among the most relevant for the vehicle users since they provide the possibility to dramatically modify the well established relationship between vehicles and drivers. After a summary of the fundamental objectives and issues related to such activities, the main achievements and contributions of the participating projects are analyzed with reference to the projects results in terms of applications, technologies, and support activities. Applications cover the functions of driver monitoring, tutoring, and information enhancement as well as co-driver systems operating in advisory, semi-automatic, and automatic modes. Technology developments concentrated on voice output systems, an electronically scanned radar, and the integration of multi-technology subsystems, and support activities concentrated on the development of methodologies, tools, and guidelines for use in the critical areas of traffic safety and system safety. The analysis concludes with a strategic assessment of the actual technical progress that the research and development (R&D) carried out within the projects of the area has provided and the identification of the strategic needs for further R&D and support to future implementation.
