THE NEED FOR DATA AND SOFTWARE INTERFACE STANDARDS IN REAL-TIME ITS INFORMATION PRODUCTS

Considerable interest has recently emerged in delivering real-time traffic and other real-time information by wireless means to mobile and portable traveler information devices or by online networks to fixed traveler information devices in homes, offices, or kiosks. The potential markets appear substantial for information providers, communications services, and user devices. However, there is a risk that a lack of agreed upon standards will lead to a variety of incompatible products and services that may discourage consumer acceptance and inhibit market growth. Several systems are now being developed for field operational tests or for product introductions without the benefit of agreed upon international standards. This paper will explore technologies, products, and services that are likely to be introduced in the near future, and it will identify a critical area where standardization could maximize interchangeability between services and devices and thereby maximize market potential. Finally, a recommended approach to a data/software interface standard for user devices will be suggested.
