STANDARDIZATION EFFORTS FOR DIGITAL ROAD MAPS AND DATABASES OF ATMS AND IN-VEHICLE NAVIGATION IN KOREA

This paper identifies the available raw data and its supplying institutions in Korea for digital road maps and the related databases. The authors survey the existing and on-going programs for the development of nationwide digital maps and databases of the related raw data. Various advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) programs, which are authorized in many local governments in Korea, are described in detail. This paper also explains the requirements of digital road maps and databases for the programs. Currently, a consortium of automobile industries is developing nationwide digital road map database for in-vehicle navigation devices. The general description of the database and its organization will be provided in this paper. The authors point out the problems in data collection, data consolidation, development of common nationwide digital road map, and related database and standardization. Finally, this paper explains the approaches and activities of an intelligent transportation systems (ITS) research and planning group for the integrated solution of these problems.
