Inductive loop (IL) detectors are the most widely used type of detectors today in the U.S. and elsewhere. Inductive loop failures may occur due to a variety of problems. Failures will eventually occur over a period of time. Hence reliable test equipment is required for routine maintenance. The Inductive Loop Tester II (ILT II) is a fully automated, digital hand held inductive loop tester. Recent advances in digital signal processing and very large scale integrated circuits have been incorporated in the ILT II. This instrument is a cost-effective and convenient method of not only testing inductive loops but also aiding in their validation, repair and maintenance. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Test and Evaluation Project 26 was designated to test and evaluate inductive loops (ILs) and their detectors in place using the ILT II. This paper contains information on the ILT II and the results of the test and evaluation project, along with future design needs.
