3D MODELLING AND ANIMATION OF CCTVS FOR FREEWAY SURVEILLANCE

In the design of a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera for freeway surveillance, one needs to have a clear knowledge of the extent of visual coverage given the highway terrain, and adjacent obstructions. Without this, one could design a CCTV camera, which upon installation could result in blind segments, either due to visual obstructions or due to the very nature of the terrain. One way of obtaining this visual coverage would be by video taping the highway from a utility bucket truck. This could be time consuming and expensive if several locations need to be tested. Louis Berger and Associates adopted a more cost-effective and innovative approach by constructing a three dimensional (3D) model of the highway with adjacent visual obstructions, and using the 3D-Studio software. Several alternative CCTV camera locations were tested relatively quickly, and the optimal camera locations determined which would provide the needed visual coverage with the least number of cameras.
