The Inspection Unit of the Bureau of Materials Engineering and Testing of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is required to inspect the fabrication of all structural materials prior to the product being shipped to a construction site. This unit also performs non-destructive testing on existing structures when requested by the Bureau of Maintenance or Bureau of Structures. This unit must also perform inspections on all materials used within a NJDOT project. Because of downsizing of the Department over the last ten years, employees have retired without being replaced and personnel have been transferred to units where they are most needed. In order to give newly transferred or hired personnel the technological information required to perform the inspections, and to keep existing employees current with the latest advancements, an in-depth training program is required. This paper presents the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Bureau of Materials Engineering and Testing, Inspection Unit training program.
