SEISMIC RETROFITTING OF BRIDGES

How well do seismic bridge retrofitting techniques work? A recent study focused on retrofit of pile-supported structures developed to improve performance of footings. Experimental test results of the study show that existing bridge footings may perform poorly under seismic loading. Footings showed significant cracking in the pile crap and failed as a result of inadequate joint shear strength in the columns/footing connection. Failure was relatively brittle with little energy dissipation.
