TAKING A TOLL
The Maine Turnpike toll highway on the east coast of the United States is about to move into a new era. Many drivers already participate in the turnpike's Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system called Transpass, but in December 1996 another system will be implemented which it is hoped will enable the turnpike authority to consecutively introduce ETC systemwide. According to the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA), toll tickets will be replaced by a more automated system of fixed fares (50 cents), which will be collected on entry at 14 side interchanges, eliminating the need to stop on departure from the system.
