DAMPING THE DECIBELS

A new road surface which it is claimed will significantly reduce traffic noise has been approved by the UK Highways Agency, following extensive trials in England and Europe. 'Whisper' concrete will now be included as an option for all roads where concrete is technically suitable, and it will be for contractors to select whether they want to use it on new road schemes. While whisper concrete can be quieter than conventional surfaces, it is not as quiet as the new porous asphalt surface. However, unlike porous asphalt, it is claimed it does not appear to suffer from increased noise as it gets older. Following research, whisper surfaces for concrete roads are being widely used in Austria and Belgium. They are also used in France, the Netherlands, Australia, Sweden and U.S.
