AN EXPERT SYSTEM FOR THE DESIGN OF FIBER-REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

This article presents a computer-based expert system that can assist civil engineers in designing SFRC members. The design criteria include flexure, shear, torsion, and toughness requirements. The purpose of the expert system is to transfer expert knowledge to those who need to design SFRC members. The expert system does not only assist civil engineers in designing SFRC members, but it is also very effective in teaching inexperienced civil engineers the behavior of SFRC members. In this expert system, five knowledge-based systems are developed, namely, bending design of singly reinforced SFRC members, bending design of doubly reinforced SFRC members, shear strength of SFRC members with stirrup design, torsional strength of SFRC members with stirrup design, and SFRC members designed for toughness.
