SAFETY EVALUATION OF HIGHWAY BRIDGE STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the difference between member reliability and system reliability of typical bridge configurations. Recent advances in reliability theory have led to the development of efficient methods for studying the reliability of structural systems. The applicability of some of these methods to the analysis of common type bridge systems is discussed here. An example illustrating the difference between the reliability of a bridge system compared to the reliability of its members is presented.
