CONDITION AND REPAIR COST ESTIMATE OF THE FRENCH ROAD BRIDGE ASSETS

This paper describes the rating system and the method used by the French Ministry of Transportation for evaluating the condition of the bridges situated on the French national road network. The objective was to given an indicator called "IQOA" representative of the overall condition of the bridge assets. The first evaluation was made in 1994 for all the 20,500 bridges longer than 2 meters. After this first evaluation, the project currently in progress has for its objective to give an evaluation of the repair cost of all the assets. The method consists of making a precise estimation of the repair of a sample of bridges chosen by lot-drawing and extrapolating the results to the whole population.
