PATHS TO GOOD PRACTICE
This article outlines the activities of the working party set up to examine current practice in the design and maintenance of footways and describes a study currently being carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory. This latest study addresses the need for a method of condition assessment with defined standards and intervention levels. It includes a large scale pedestrian attitude survey including disabled users. Some of the aspects to be considered and some of the findings so far are discussed. Design guides for new construction and maintenance based on this survey are to be published in the summer of 1996. Other areas to be considered by the working group are outlined.
