WIRE ROPE SAFETY FENCE - THE WEST YORKSHIRE EXPERIENCE
The use of a wire rope safety fence along the central reservation of the M62 is discussed. Chosen originally in 1969 for its minimal effect on wind-driven snow, the fencing has proved particularly successful and cost efficient. The original design is described. By 1987 the West Yorkshire Police considered that the wire rope safety fence had a 'proven safety record unequalled by other types of safety barrier'. In 1986 the Department of Transport approved a 4-rope design suitable for hard or soft medians. Details are given of the 4-rope system which has also been found to be extremely effective. The types of repairs required and costs involved are indicated.
