MEASURING STRESSES IN SHOTCRETE

This article considers the problems involved in designing and installing cells to measure stress in shotcrete and describes the Glotzl unit designed for this purpose. Pressure pads are circular or rectangular and come in various sizes. Pressure inside the pad loads a diaphragm inside the hydraulic transducer or compensator. This is operated pneumatically at low pressures and hydraulically at higher pressures. Guidance is given for the installation of the pad in order to ensure accurate results. The Glotzl system includes a repressurising system to counteract the shrinkage caused by the concrete hardening.
