NEURAL COMPUTING

The concept of neural computing, or neural networks, is described. The application of neural computing to tunnelling and trenchless technology in the form of Machine Health Monitoring is then considered. This is done by attaching sensors to a machine which send signals that are periodically analysed for abnormalities. These can be acted on before faults become serious. Machine safety and reliability can be improved. Risks are described however which are due to choosing the wrong application due to poor technical knowledge, overestimating the capabilities of the system and user resistance. Examples are given of how they can go wrong.
