LISBON METRO

Projects involved in the extensions of the Lisbon metro in time for the 1998 Expo Exhibition are described. The progress of work on the 4 different lines is outlined. Four large design and construct contracts have been let to construct the Expo line from Alameda north-east to the site of the exhibition at Oriente. These involve the construction of tunnels and stations. Work on lines A, B and C include the construction of cut and cover stations and tunnelling. Details are given of the various tunnelling techniques being used (which include the New Austrian Tunnelling Method and Earth Pressure Boring methods through clay and sand deposits), the value of the works, the contractors involved and progress so far.
