FLEET MANAGEMENT USING INTELLIGENT ENGINES
This article discusses the advantages of Celect, Cummin's electronically controlled unit injector fuel system for heavy-duty diesel engines, which has been widely accepted by commercial vehicle operators. This acceptance has been based on the ability of the Celect high-pressure fuel system to meet increasingly strict exhaust emission legislation requirements, and exceed customer demands for greater fuel economy, performance, durability, and driveability. Engine durability has been enhanced by the availability of an engine protection feature, which monitors critical engine parameters. To meet the demand for faster and more sophisticated fault diagnostic tools, Cummins has developed and introduced its Intelect software, which runs on IBM-compatible personal computers under the Windows operating system. Intelect has been designed for the workshop environment, provides a record of all activities undertaken on each engine, and enables the creation of a database about all vehicles in a fleet, which can monitor their performance and reliability. Cummins has also developed and launched RoadRelay, to display information to a driver. RoadRelay can monitor poor driving techniques, by recording the number of brake applications and sudden decelerations. For the covering abstract see IRRD 881545.
