A SURVEY OF EUROPEAN DIESEL FUEL QUALITY

Over 1300 samples, collected from fifteen European countries during the period 1991 to 1993, were analysed to determine the quality of automotive diesel fuel during the period and provide data on fuel characteristics to assist in the cost estimates for changes. The findings are summarised by country for density, viscosity, distillation, sulphur content, cetane index and number, cloud point and cold filter plugging point. Data is included on winter and summer grade fuel. Limited data for fuel consumption are presented in an appendix. Samples were taken at various locations such as refineries, terminals or service stations and were tested by either the major retailers or by independent laboratories. Information on sampling/testing, specifications, additives and sales are given in "Quality Statements" from most countries. The data are not sales weighted but show differences due to levels of specification and refinery complexity.
