RESULTS AND EFFECTS OF VMS CONTROL IN AALBORG

This paper considers the effectiveness of Denmark's first major dynamic traffic information system. The system, called TRAFIX, seeks to obtain a better distribution of traffic across a bridge and a tunnel between Aalborg and Norresundby. Delays are automatically detected on major north- and south-bound routes and the information used to guide motorists via 14 variable message signs to the quickest route. The percentage of cars diverting to alternative routes in response to information was assessed by questionnaires, stop interviews and measurement with split detectors. Motorists responded positively to the system and degrees of diversion of around 25% were obtained. For the covering abstract see IRRD 880251.
