MIDBLOCK SIGNALLED PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS - ALTERNATIVE OPERATING STRATEGIES

Changes to operating strategies for midblock signalled pedestrian crossings are considered with the objective of improving pedestrian amenity, in particular in areas with a 30mph speed limit. The current operation of Pelican and Puffin crossings is discussed. The possibility of using alternative strategies is examined and four alternatives suggested. Graphs are presented showing simulation results for measures of performance using the alternative strategies. It is recommended that such strategies could be implemented immediately in low or medium flow situations. For the covering abstract see IRRD 880251.
