NEW FACTORS ON RIGHT-TURN CAPACITY AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS

A study is described which examined the gap-acceptance characteristics of right-turning traffic with the aim of developing a method for precisely determining right-turn capacity at signalised junctions. Factors examined include the existence of opposing left-turning vehicles, the timing of right turns and the speed of opposing straight-through vehicles. Data were collected at an intersection in Tokyo using a video camera. An analysis was than made of a) vehicle type, b) timing of signal phasing and c) time of passing 4 reference points. The results show the size of gaps found acceptable and that the probability of gap acceptance decreases later in the green phase. For the covering abstract see IRRD 880251.
