ACCIDENTS WITH OLD DRIVERS - A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF SOME SELECTED ACCIDENT TYPES

OLYCKOR MED AELDRE BILFOERARE - DETALJANALYS AV OLYCKSORSAKER FOER NAAGRA UTVALDA OLYCKSTYPER

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the causes of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers, i.e. those 70 and older. One goal is to attempt to analyze the extent to which changes in the physical and mental condition of the driver may have contributed to an accident, and whether the design of the physical environment may have promoted the occurrence of an accident. Another goal is to propose accident prevention measures. The present project consists of two parts, a basic analysis containing a general description of accidents involving older drivers, and a detailed analysis of five selected types of accidents. The basic analysis includes all of the personal injury accidents involving drivers 70 years of age and up that occurred in the Nordic countries during 1989 and 1990, a total of 4,735 accidents. The detailed analysis concentrates on five types of accidents in which older drivers are relatively often involved: single accidents, rear end collisions, head-on collisions (including accidents with an oncoming vehicle that occur while passing), accidents involving people on bicycles or mopeds, and accidents involving pedestrians.
