TOWARD PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE FAST-TRAC AS A CASE STUDY

In 1993, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) embarked upon a mission to develop a national framework for the deployment of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and related technologies. The objective of this mission was to ensure that deployment activities being performed at local and state levels would be compatible and somewhat transferable at the national level. During development of the Implementation Strategy, several ongoing deployment programs have been used as case studies to test and refine this approach. This paper documents this process as it was applied to the FAST-TRAC (Faster and Safer Travel Through Traffic Routing and Advanced Controls) program in Oakland County Michigan. The experience represented herein should be of interest to transportation professionals at all technical and managerial levels.
