Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) promise to increase the efficiencies of the existing transportation infrastructure. However, most current installations of ITS technologies are limited both in scope and geographic coverage. One of the reasons for this limited deployment is the complexity of integrating the different systems. The National Transportation Communications ITS Protocol (NTCIP) will resolve the integration problems by allowing the integration of different manufacturers' components and by allowing a variety of devices to share a common communications infrastructure. The NTCIP is a suite of standards which specify requirements for the structure of communications and the management of the standards. Requirements for subsystem to subsystem communications and subsystem to roadside communications will be specified. These standards will exist for all devices in the systems and will need to be met by manufacturers.
