INTERMODAL ITS? A SYSTEMS PERSPECTIVE ON THE TERMINOLOGY, FEASIBILITY, AND IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES

In this paper three intermodal issues are discussed with a systems perspective: 1) Concepts of intermodalism, interconnectivity, interconnectedness, the distinction between multimodal and intermodal systems and the difference between inter-modal and intra-modal nodes and links; 2) Merits of intermodal transportation systems and challenges facing the deployment of intermodal systems and the offering of intermodal services and; 3) Role of ITS in the evolution of, and access to, intermodal services, especially in light of the authors' experiences with the on-going development of the national ITS System Architecture and a possible role for ITS America in promoting intermodalism.
