DECODING THE "VIDEO ALPHABET" TO UNDERSTAND STATE-OF-THE-ART IN CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION (CCTV) TECHNOLOGY FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS (ITS) PROJECTS
Many acronyms have evolved recently related to Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras. Some of these acronyms relate to significant improvement in CCTV technology. This paper discusses Digital Signal Processor (DSP) CCTV technology, defining performance features and benefits to Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications. A survey of available DSP CCTV products is included. DSP technology and relationship to other acronyms such as JPEGS, MPEGS, M-JPEGS, and ITU/CCITT H.261 are included in the paper. The paper discusses current ITS needs which are not being met by current CCTV products, presenting a summary of requirements for next-generation CCTV cameras. The paper concludes with a short discussion of the Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. Denver I-25 project which includes one of the first ITS deployments of DSP CCTV technology.
