TIS, HIGH SPEED DATA SYSTEMS, AND NAVIGATION SYSTEMS: MOVING TOWARDS DEPLOYMENT

As information sharing becomes more and more of a reality in today's consumer market place, a natural emphasis on in-vehicle information systems has developed. The Seattle Wide-area Information For Travelers (SWIFT) project is being cooperatively demonstrated by a consortium of State agencies and private corporations. This system provides a model infrastructure and vehicle system that will work in a real environment using hardware and software that is commensurate with currently available consumer technology. Information gathering centers will use workstation based software to locate traffic incidents and transmit this and other information to vehicle receivers over a FM subcarrier-based data channel. The in-vehicle receivers will work in conjunction with navigation systems to present this data to the user in an integrated manner. This system provides a communication channel, a protocol, and a method of gathering and presenting information to a user. This basic chassis provides the services that allow a variety of experiments to be performed in the general area of Traveler Information Systems.
