The options available for controlling runoff from aircraft deicing generally involve the containment and subsequent treatment of contaminated runoff from aircraft deicing areas. These strategies are possible because aircraft deicing can be confined to relatively small, hydrologically isolated areas, which results in volumes of contaminated runoff that are manageable under almost all weather conditions. Deicers discussed include: urea, sodium acetate, sodium formate, calcium magnesium acetate, propylene and ethylene glycol, and potassium acetate.
