ACCEPTABLE RISKS FOR MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE

This book contains the proceedings of a seminar on acceptable risks for extreme events in the planning and design of major infrastructure, held in Sydney, Australia, in 1994. It should be of interest to civil engineers and other professionals who are involved in the planning and design of major infrastructure such as dams, water supply, waste disposal, roads, airports and harbors. There is a need to consider the risks posed by existing infrastructure, and to assess whether these are acceptable. Often the potential hazard may be initiated by low probability, extreme events, such as large floods and earthquakes.
