RDS-TMC A TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT TOOL AND A COMMERCIAL PRODUCT

RDS-TMC can and probably should be handled as a new distribution technique for traffic information. The extra functionalities offered by RDS-TMC makes it possible to use as a traffic management tool. Information is received much quicker and can be accessed much easier. Informing the road-users about traffic conditions "in time", enables them to replan their route, to opt for another time of travel, or even for another mode of transport. This results in more efficient use of infrastructure. For this reason the Dutch Ministry of Traffic and the Dutch Police are playing an active role in defining the TMC-service. For the industry, production and sale of TMC-receivers is a commercial business. Also the exploitation of the service can be commercially attractive. However, to make this product a success, the service must fulfill the needs of road-users, road-authorities, and police. In a pilot project it was shown that for the development and implementation of intelligent transportation systems, industry and road authorities should and can work closely together. The consequences will then be useful systems and services.
