MULTI SERVICES/MULTI PROVIDERS REMOTE TICKETING ON THE MARSEILLE METROPOLITAN AREA
The European DRIVE/GAUDI project is an experiment in the metropolitan area of Marseille in the field of metro, bus, carpark, train, and tunnel payment systems using the same reloadable smart card. The holders use an all purpose portable unit that takes the smart card and that is the remote dialog tool and the means of paying for the service used in traveling. The portable unit is in fact a pocket smart card (reads/writes) able to transfer quickly and bidirectionally, through an infrared link, data between the smart card and fixed equipment. The portable unit is fitted with a display used to view the smart card balance, validity date, or any information stored in the smart card. A push button is used to launch the payment transaction. The system was operational on November 14, 1994, with 1,000 smart card holders.
