FAST-TRAC AT THE WORLD CUP
FAST-TRAC was part of a comprehensive strategy to manage traffic for World Cup soccer matches at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. By June 1, 1994, the Road Commission for Oakland County, Michigan, equipped over 50 intersections around the Pontiac Silverdome with the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System. The Road Commission was also coordinated the traffic management effort with World Cup organizers, local police, area businesses, and others. This test of the system's capabilities proved to be a success. Fewer police officers were required for traffic control, and the time required to clear traffic was reduced with each of the four games. New special event signal programs were written and fine-tuned based on the experience gained from World Cup. Good planning, cooperation, and the flexibility of the single system lead to this success.
