A METHOD TO CALCULATE VEHICLE FUEL CONSUMPTION ALLOWING FOR TRAFFIC STREAM FLUCTUATION

Recently, a great amount of vehicle travel time has been lost due to traffic congestion, which is chronically occurring on the road networks of great cities, such as Tokyo. Moreover, vehicle fuel consumption loss and extra exhaust emission caused by road traffic congestion become serious problems. When considering the effects on traffic stream condition of a transportation infrastructure improvement or implementation of a travel time information system, the appropriate estimation of vehicle energy consumption loss is extremely important. Until now, vehicle fuel consumption has been calculated based on the simple relationship between vehicle running speed and fuel consumption. In this manner, however, influence of vehicle speed fluctuation on fuel consumption cannot be taken into account, and energy consumption loss from traffic congestion is hard to calculate. In this paper, vehicle speed fluctuation is investigated in relation to road alignment and traffic volume, and a method to calculate vehicle fuel consumption on an urban expressway is examined. In particular, a method that can explicitly deal with the loss of vehicle fuel consumption caused by traffic congestion is examined. In those studies, two kinds of collected data are used. One is the data collected in the experiments under several real traffic conditions made by a vehicle equipped with measuring instruments. The other is the data of traffic volume and average speed collected by detectors in the road sections on which the experiments by the equipped vehicle are carried out.
