DYNAMIC ESTIMATION OF ORIGIN-DESTINATION FLOWS FROM LINK TRAFFIC COUNTS

A dynamic estimation model of origin-destination (O-D) flows from link traffic counts is proposed. The proposed model considers time information contained in the time sequence of link traffic counts in order to formulate dynamic relationships. These dynamic relationships can describe the interrelations between the time-varying O-D flows and observed link volumes at each time interval and include the flow conservation on each link which exists on the route connecting a specific O-D pair under the dynamic process. To treat O-D flows as dynamic process, the model allows for the time variation of the travel time from origin to destination, which is assumed to be dependent on the traffic volume of each link throughout the entire route. Time delay between the time passing the observation point and the departure time at origin is also represented in the model. Recently, vehicle sensors and vehicle detectors that can measure traffic volumes and travel speeds on links are located widely, and the link traffic counts in time series that are used by the proposed model are easily available. Therefore, the proposed model is particularly useful for providing traffic information that is indispensable for traffic guidance and traffic control by tracking time-varying O-D flows, the dynamic relationships between O-D flows and link traffic volumes, and time-varying travel times from origin to destination with such link traffic counts.
