DESIGN CRITERIA FOR FENDERS AT FERRY LANDINGS

The authors of this paper develop a procedure for selecting design criteria for the berthing energy fender systems at ferry landings. Specifically, end-berthing designs are considered. To determine the distribution of approach velocity for kinetic energy calculations, a sample of 568 landing events are reviewed. An attempt is made to define an upper bound for the berthing coefficient. The authors examine the upper limits of the approach velocity by analyzing a sample of berthing events, and then select a safety factor by making systematic judgments, a berthing coefficient based on experimental results, and a design berthing energy using the kinetic energy formula. To enhance the placement of landing aids and to develop design criteria for other landing structures, additional research is suggested.
