THE ROOTS OF AUTOMOBILE ROUTE GUIDANCE

At least 15 turn-by-turn automatic route guides were patented and a few of these mechanical devices reached the market as the automobile proliferated around 1910. Electronic route guidance concepts (both infrastructure supported and autonomous) were introduced in late 1960s and early 1970s. The author describes these early developments that foreshadowed the sophisticated automobile navigation and route guidance systems of the 1990s.
