VARIABLE MESSAGE SIGNS: THE ITS TECHNOLOGY TO WATCH
About a dozen large American metropolitan areas now display variable message signs (VMS), usually on structures across interstate highways or other main arteries. The signs are a component of advanced traveler information systems technology and one that motorists are most likely to encounter in their daily trips. George Mason University's multi-year study of motorist attitudes revealed that the technology has great potential for public service but also may confront formidable resistance. The article reviews the broad scope of the findings.
