SINGLE-POINT TANKER MOORING MEASUREMENTS IN THE NORTH SEA

Single-point mooring forces and tanker motion data were recorded aboard the 45-Mdwt tanker THEOTOKOS at Ekofisk in the North Sea. The measurement program was conducted by EPR personnel under the terms of a cooperative agreement with Phillips Petroleum Company - Norway. Measurements made intermittently from November 1971 through April 1972 generally confirm what had been expected from model test data. The maximum forces in the bow hawser attaching the THEOTOKOS to the single-point mooring buoy were chiefly a function of wave height. The THEOTOKOS experienced long period yaw cycles while moored which exceeded in magnitude those observed in model tests. The model test results tend to overestimate the bow hawser forces observed on the THEOTOKOS and tend to underestimate the pitch and roll motions observed.
