WIDENING HORIZONS
The use of reinforced earth structures on a motorway widening project on the M25 between junctions 15 and 16 is outlined. Tarmac won the contract on a conforming bid based on conventional structures. The southbound carriageway was completed in this way whilst approval was sought for a reinforced earth scheme on the northbound carriageway. The design was based on the Swiss Ruegger system adapted to conform to acceptable British practice. Details are given of the construction of the embankments using horizontal layers of geogrid and compacted London clay. A steel mesh is used as formwork. Topsoil is tamped into this and the face fronted with a vegetation geotextile ready for hydroseeding.
