SIDE PROTECTION SYSTEMS - STATE OF THE ART AND OUTLOOK ON FUTURE TRENDS

In the early seventies, vehicles destined for the US market were already being fitted with reinforced doors to comply with the legal standards of that time. Ever since, these reinforcements have been constantly improved and optimized. In 1978, the European automotive manufacturers started to develop suitable side crash test procedures, including a movable, deformable side crash barrier. The dynamic side crash procedures used in the USA and Europe are explained and corresponding results are presented. This paper gives an idea of the side protection systems developed by Porsche since 1972 with the aim of meeting the US requirements on static tests. It gives an outlook on future side impact protection systems such as the side airbag and its components. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 880121.
