IMPROVED SAFETY OF CAR OCCUPANTS IN FRONTAL COLLISIONS WITH TRUCKS

This paper describes the research programme on front underrun protection that is being performed by the TNO Crash-Safety Research Centre for the Dutch Ministry of Transport. Results of experimental and mathematical simulations clearly show the potential of reducing a 65 km/h offset frontal car-to-truck collision to a survivable 50 km/h offset collision by modifying the truck front geometry and stiffness. Prototypes of energy-absorbing FUPSs using crumple tube techniques have been developed and evaluated. The research findings are used in European co-operation programmes, which may lead to improved heavy goods vehicle standards and regulations in view of passive safety.
