This paper describes the headway distance control system in consideration of the driver's acceleration and deceleration characteristics. The brake operation in approaching the preceding vehicle and the accelerator operation in maintaining safe headway distance were analyzed with many average drivers, which are the basis of controlling the headway distance. It was found that the driver maintains the headway distance proportional to his vehicle speed in case of following the preceding vehicle. The driver decides to apply a brake at a headway distance determined by the relative speed between vehicles, and the braking deceleration is proportional to the relative speed. These results were applied to the headway distance control system, which recognizes the preceding vehicle, the travelling lane and the headway distance by stereo camera.
