THE ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF AIRPORTS: THE CASE OF GRAN CANARIA

One of the recommendations in the Report by the Committee of Experts for Air Transport to the European Commission suggests that the requirement of new airport capacity is vital for the success of European Union air transport policy and so the public should be informed more actively of the positive economic, social and environmental benefits of air transport. Economic impact studies try to underline the economic significance of airports, but it is not unusual to find an overvaluation of benefits that undermines value to the conclusions. In this paper, an estimation of the economic significance of the airport of Gran Canaria is carried out. Economic impacts are classified as direct, indirect and induced and a distinction is made between the concept of economic significance and economic activity of the airport.
